The United States Military Hospital at Fort Monroe, Virginia was established by General Benjamin F Butler by cosolidation of Hampton Hospital & Chesapeake Hospital (before the War a \"Female Institute). An original Civil War General Order issued by Major General Butler at HQ Dept of Virginia & North Carolina, Fort Monroe, Va, July 31, 1863 announcing the Hampton and Chesapeake General Hospitals will be consolidated and known as \" The United States General Hospital, Fortress Monroe \". 1p 8 x 5\" printed text. Edge wear, age spots, Overall VG. Postwar, the hospital became the Hampton National Disabled Soldiers Home; today the site is part of the Hampton Virginia Veterans Administration Medical Center.
