Lewis Franklin Powell Jr.(September 19, 1907– August 25, 1998) was an American lawyer and jurist who served as anAssociate Justiceof theSupreme Court of the United Statesfrom 1971 to 1987. Powell compiled a generally conservative and business-aligned record on the Court. Born inSuffolk, Virginia, he graduated from bothWashington and Lee Law SchoolandHarvard Law Schooland served in theUnited States Army Air ForcesduringWorld War II. He worked for a large law firm inRichmond, Virginia, focusing on corporate law and representing clients such as theTobacco Institute. In 1971, PresidentRichard Nixonappointed Powell to succeed Associate JusticeHugo Black. He retired from the Court during the administration of PresidentRonald Reagan, and was eventually succeeded byAnthony Kennedy. His tenure largely overlapped with that of Chief JusticeWarren Burger, and Powell was often a key swing vote on theBurger Court. His majority opinions includeFirst National Bank of Boston v. BellottiandMcCleskey v. Kemp, and he wrote an influential opinion inRegents of the University of California v. Bakke. He notably joined the majority in cases such asUnited States v. Nixon,Roe v. Wade,Plyler v. Doe, andBowers v. Hardwick.
