Apollo 11 was launched by aSaturn VrocketfromKennedy Space CenteronMerritt Island, Florida, on July 16 at 13:32UTC, and it was the fifth crewed mission ofNASA\'sApolloprogram. The Apollospacecrafthad three parts: acommand module (CM)with a cabin for thethree astronauts, the only part that returned to Earth; aservice module (SM), which supported the commandmodule with propulsion, electrical power, oxygen, and water; and alunar module (LM)that had two stages—adescent stage for landing on the Moon and an ascent stage to place theastronauts back into lunar orbit.

After beingsent to the Moonby the Saturn V\'s thirdstage, the astronauts separated the spacecraft from it and traveled for threedays until they entered lunar orbit.
