They were among the very select invited spectators at the launch of Apollo 11, which lifted off from Pad 39A at Kennedy Space Center at 9:32 am EDT on July 16, 1969. Apollo 11 was launched by aSaturn VrocketfromKennedy Space CenteronMerritt Island, Florida, on July 16 at 13:32UTC, and it was the fifth crewed mission ofNASA\'sApolloprogram. The Apollospacecrafthad three parts: acommand module (CM)with a cabin for thethree astronauts, the only part that returned to Earth; aservice module (SM), which supported the commandmodule with propulsion, electrical power, oxygen, and water; and alunar module (LM)that had two stages—adescent stage for landing on the Moon and an ascent stage to place theastronauts back into lunar orbit.

After beingsent to the Moonby the Saturn V\'s thirdstage, the astronauts separated the spacecraft from it and traveled for threedays until they entered lunar orbit. Armstrong and Aldrin then moved intoEagleand landed in theSea of Tranquilityon July 20. Theastronauts usedEagle\'s ascent stage tolift off from the lunar surface and rejoin Collins in the command module. TheyjettisonedEaglebefore they performed the maneuvers thatpropelledColumbiaout of the last of its 30 lunar orbits ontoa trajectory back to Earth.[9]Theyreturned to Earth andsplasheddownin the Pacific Ocean on July 24 after more than eight days inspace.

Armstrong\'s first step onto the lunar surface was broadcast onlive TVtoa worldwide audience. He described the event as \"one small step for [a]man, one giant leap for mankind.\"[a][15]Apollo11 effectively proved U.S. victory in theSpaceRaceto demonstrate spaceflight superiority, by fulfilling a nationalgoal proposed in 1961 byPresidentJohn F.Kennedy, \"before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon andreturning him safely to the Earth.\"[16]
