Sir Aaron KlugOMFRSFMedSciHonFRMS(11 August 1926 – 20 November 2018)was aLithuanian-born, South African-educated, Britishbiophysicist, and winner of the 1982Nobel Prize in Chemistryfor his development ofcrystallographic electron microscopyand his structural elucidation of biologically importantnucleic acid-protein complexes. Klug was born inŽelva, Lithuania toJewishparents Lazar, a cattleman, and Bella (née Silin) Klug, with whom he moved to South Africa at the age of two. He was educated atDurban High School.[1]Paul de Kruif\'s book Microbe Hunters aroused his interest in microbiology. He started to study microbiology, but then moved into physics and maths, graduating with aBachelor of Sciencedegree at theUniversity of the WitwatersrandJohannesburg. He studied physics and obtained hisMaster of Sciencedegree at theUniversity of Cape Town. He was awarded an1851 Research Fellowshipfrom theRoyal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851,which enabled him to move to England, completing his PhD in research physics atTrinity College, Cambridgein 1953. Following his PhD, Klug moved toBirkbeck Collegein theUniversity of Londonin late 1953, and started working with virologistRosalind Franklinin the lab of crystallographerJohn Bernal. This experience aroused a lifelong interest in the study of viruses, and during his time there he made discoveries in the structureof thetobacco mosaic virus. In 1962 he moved to the newly builtMedical Research Council(MRC)Laboratory of Molecular Biology(LMB) in Cambridge. Over the following decade Klug used methods fromX-ray diffraction, microscopy and structural modelling to develop crystallographic electron microscopy in which a sequence of two-dimensional images of crystals taken from different angles are combined to produce three-dimensional images of the target. He studied the structure oftransfer RNA, and found what is known aszinc fingersas well as the neurofibrils in Alzheimer\'s disease. Also in 1962 Klug had been offered a teaching Fellowship atPeterhouse, Cambridge. After receiving the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1982, he went on teaching because he found the courses interesting and was later made an Honorary Fellow at the College.Between 1986 and 1996 he was director of the Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge. Klug servedon the Advisory Council for theCampaign for Science and Engineering. He also servedon the Board of Scientific Governors atThe Scripps Research Institute. He andDai Reesapproached theWellcome Trustto found theWellcome Sanger Institute, which was a key player in theHuman Genome Project.
