Rear AdmiralRichardEvelyn Byrd Jr.(October 25, 1888 – March 11, 1957) was an Americannaval officer and explorer.He was a recipient of theMedal of Honor, the highest honor for valor given by theUnited States, and was a pioneering American aviator, polar explorer, andorganizer of polar logistics. Aircraft flights in which he served as anavigatorand expedition leader crossed the AtlanticOcean, a segment of the Arctic Ocean, and a segment of theAntarctic Plateau. Byrd claimed that his expeditions had beenthe first to reach both theNorth Poleand theSouth Poleby air. His claim to have reached the NorthPole is disputed. He is also known for discoveringMount Sidley, the largest dormant volcano in Antarctica. Byrdwas born in Winchester, Virginia, the son of Esther Bolling (Flood) andRichard Evelyn Byrd Sr.Hewas a descendant of one of theFirst Families of Virginia.His ancestors include planterJohn Rolfeand his wifePocahontas,William Byrd IIofWestover Plantation, whoestablishedRichmond, andRobert "King" Carter, a colonial governor. He wasthe brother ofVirginia GovernorandU.S. SenatorHarry F. Byrd, a dominant figure in theVirginiaDemocratic Partyfromthe 1920s until the 1960s;their fatherservedasSpeaker ofthe Virginia House of Delegatesfor a time.[ OnJanuary 20, 1915, Richard married Marie Donaldson Ames (d. 1974). He wouldlater name a region of Antarctic land he discovered "Marie Byrd Land" after her, and a mountain range,theAmes Range, after her father. They had four children –Richard Evelyn Byrd III,Evelyn Bolling Byrd Clarke, Katharine Agnes Byrd Breyer, and Helen ByrdStabler. By late 1924, the Byrd family moved into a large brownstone house at 9Brimmer Street in Boston's fashionableBeacon Hillneighborhood]that had been purchased by Marie's father, awealthy industrialist. Byrd was friends withEdsel Fordand his fatherHenry Ford, whose admiration of his polar exploits helped togain Byrd sponsorship and financing for his various polar expeditions from theFord Motor Company. Byrd attended theVirginia MilitaryInstitutefor two years and transferred to theUniversity of Virginia,before financial circumstances inspired his starting over and taking acommission to theUnited States Naval Academy,where he was appointed as amidshipmanon May 28, 1908. While at the Naval Academy,he suffered two injuries to his right ankle (one was by playing football andthe other was while dismounting gymnastic rings during a competition). Althoughhe was allowed to remain at the academy, his injuries eventually led to hisforced retirement from the Navy in 1916. On June 8, 1912, Byrd graduated fromthe Naval Academy and was commissioned anensignin the UnitedStates Navy. On July 14, 1912, he was assigned to the battleshipUSSWyoming.During service in the Caribbean Sea, Byrd received his first letter ofcommendation, and later aSilver Lifesaving Medal, for twice plunging fully clothed tothe rescue of a sailor who had fallen overboard. In April 1914, he transferredto the armored cruiserUSSWashingtonandserved in Mexican waters in June following theAmericaninterventionin April. His next assignment was to thegunboatUSSDolphin,which also served as the yacht of the Secretary of the Navy. This assignmentbrought Byrd into contact with high-ranking officials and dignitaries,including thenAssistant Secretary of theNavyFranklin Roosevelt. He waspromoted to the rank oflieutenant (junior grade)onJune 8, 1915. During Byrd's assignment toDolphinshe wascommanded by futureFleet AdmiralWilliam D. Leahy, who served as chief of staff toPresidentFranklin D. RooseveltduringWorld War II Byrd's last assignment before forcedretirement was to the presidential yachtUSSMayflower.On March 15, 1916, Byrd, much to his frustration, was medically retired onthree-quarters pay for an ankle injury he suffered on boardMayflower.Shortly thereafter, on December 14, 1916, he was assigned as the inspector andinstructor for theRhode Island Naval MilitiainProvidence, Rhode Island.Whileserving in this position, he was commended by Brigadier GeneralCharles W. Abbot, theadjutant general of Rhode Island, for making great strides in improving theefficiency of the militia, and on April 25, 1928, was promoted to captain byact of the Rhode Island General Assembly in recognition of his flight to theNorth Pole in 1926. hortly after the entry of the United States into the FirstWorld War in April 1917, Byrd oversaw the mobilization of the Rhode IslandNaval Militia. He was then recalled to active duty and was assigned to theOffice of Naval Operations and served in a desk job as secretary and organizerof the Navy Department Commission on Training Camps. In the autumn of 1917, hewas sent to naval aviation school atPensacola, Florida. He qualified as a naval aviator (number608) in June 1918. He then commanded naval air forces atNaval Air Station HalifaxinNova Scotia, Canada, from July 1918 until the armistice inNovember. In that assignment, he was promoted to the permanent rank oflieutenant and the temporary rank of lieutenant commander. For hisservices during the war, he received a letter of commendation from Secretary ofthe NavyJosephus Daniels, whichwas after World War II converted to aNavy Commendation Medal.
