Edward Sylvester Ellis(April 11, 1840 –June 20, 1916) was an American author who was born inOhioanddied atCliff Island, Maine. Elliswas a teacher, school administrator, journalist, and the author of hundreds ofbooks and magazine articlesthat he produced by his name and by a numberofpen names. Notable fiction stories by Ellis includeThe Steam Man of thePrairiesandSeth Jones, or the Captives of theFrontier.Internationally, Edward S. Ellis is probably known best forhisDeerfootnovels read widely by young boys until the 1950s. Seth Joneswas the most significant of earlydime novelsof publishersBeadle and Adams.It is said that Seth Jones was one ofAbraham Lincoln\'s favorite stories.During the mid-1880s, after a fiction-writingcareer of some thirty years, Ellis eventually began composing more seriousworks of biography, history, andpersuasive writing. Of note was \"The Life of Colonel DavidCrockett\", which had the story ofDavy Crockettgivinga speech usually called \"Not Yours To Give\". It was a speech inopposition to awarding money to a Navy widow on the grounds that Congress hadno Constitutional mandate to give charity. It was said to have been inspired byCrockett\'s meeting with aHoratio Bunce, a much quotedman inLibertariancircles, but one for whom historical evidence isnon-existent.
