Ural Alexis Johnson(October17, 1908 – March 24, 1997) was aUnited Statesdiplomat. Ural Alexis Johnsonwas born inFalun, Kansasinto a family of Swedish descent. Hismother named him forthe mountain range, ofwhich she learned from a geography book. He had a rural upbringing andschooling until 1923, when the family moved toGlendale, California. Hegraduated fromOccidental Collegein1931, majoring in economics. Johnsonentered theUnited States ForeignServicein 1935. After serving inTokyo,Seoul,South Korea, Mukden (nowShenyang, where he was interned at the start of World War II),andRio de Janeiro,Brazil, he was assigned as Consul and later Consul GeneralatYokohama,Japanfrom 1945 to 1949. From 1949 to1953, he served in various positions in the Department of State\'s Far EastBureau, mainly concerned with Japan and Korea, rising to be Deputy AssistantSecretary of State with responsibilities for the entire bureau.\" Heplayed a role in the armistice in theKorean War. He was ambassador toCzechoslovakiafrom 1953 to 1958,Thailandfrom 1958 to 1961, and toJapanfrom1966 to 1969. While Ambassador to Czechoslovakia, he represented the UnitedStates in a long series of meetings in Geneva with the Chinese Communists. Inthe absence of diplomatic relations these were the principal point of contactbetween the two governments. He was Deputy Under Secretary for PoliticalAffairs and in theExcommfrom 1961 to 1964. From 1964to 1965, he was Deputy Ambassador to theRepublic of Vietnam. In1965, he returned to the position of Deputy Under Secretary for PoliticalAffairs from 1965 to 1966. He also served asUnderSecretary of State for Political Affairsfrom 1969 to 1973.After theIndependence of Bangladesh,he saidBangladeshwould be always aninternationalbasket case.[3]He was chief United States delegateto theStrategic Arms LimitationTalksfrom 1973 until retirement in 1977. His memoirThe RightHand of Powerwas published in 1984. AsUnderSecretary for Political Affairsat theU.S. State Department,Johnson was involved in theApollo 11lunar landing ceremonial activities. Hesuggested that a plaque be placed on the surface of theMoon.After several changes in a high level committee, it stated, \"we came inpeace for all mankind.\" Johnson was also sensitive to the idea of raisingaU.S. flagon thesurface of the Moon, as it might symbolize territorial acquisition. Later,theCongressdecided thata U.S. flag would be placed on the Moon byNeil ArmstrongandBuzz Aldrin. Ural Alexis Johnson died on March 24, 1997frompneumonia. His last residence was atCary, North Carolina.However, he was buried at the Rock Creek Cemetery inWashington, District ofColumbia. In 1995 Johnson was presented the Lifetime Contributionsto American Diplomacy Award by theAmericanForeign Service Association.
