AbbaSolomon Meir Eban(/ˈɑːbəˈiːbən/( listen);Hebrew:אבא אבן[ˈ(ʔ)aba ˈ(ʔ)even];bornAubrey Solomon Meir Eban; 2 February 1915 – 17 November 2002)was an Israeli diplomat and politician, and a scholar of the Arabic and Hebrewlanguages. During his career, he served asForeign Affairs Minister,Education Minister,andDeputy Prime Minister of Israel.He was the secondambassador to the United Statesand the firstPermanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations. Hewas also Vice President of theUnited Nations GeneralAssemblyand President of theWeizmann Institute ofScience. Born inCape Town,South Africa, on 2 February 1915 toLithuanian Jewishparents, Eban moved to theUnited Kingdomat an early age. As a child, he recalledbeing sent to his grandfather\'s house every weekend to study theHebrew language,Talmud, andBiblical literature.He lived for a period of time inBelfast. He attendedSt Olave\'s Grammar School,thenSouthwarkand read Classics and Oriental languagesatQueens\' College, Cambridge,where he achieved adouble first.During his time at University and afterwards, Eban was highly involved intheFederation of ZionistYouthand was editor of its ideological journal,TheYoung Zionist. After graduating, he researched Arabic and Hebrew as aFellowofPembroke Collegefrom1938 to 1939. At the outbreak ofWorld War II, he worked forChaim Weizmannat theWorld Zionist OrganizationinLondon from December 1939. He served in the British Army in Egypt and MandatePalestine, becoming an intelligence officer in Jerusalem, where he coordinatedand trained volunteers for resistance in the event of a German invasion,serving as a liaison officer for the Allies to the JewishYishuv. After the war he continued in his post, helping to setup and run the British Foreign Office\'sMiddle EastCentre for Arab Studieswhich was originally based in Jerusalembefore relocating to Shemlan near Beirut. He was at that time known as\"Aubrey Evans\". In 1947, he translated from the original ArabicMazeof Justice: Diary of a Country Prosecutor, a 1937 novel byTawfiq al-Hakim.
