Gone with the Windis a 1939Americanepichistoricalromance filmadapted fromthe 1936 novelbyMargaret Mitchell. The film was produced byDavid O. SelznickofSelznick InternationalPicturesand directed byVictor Fleming. Set in theAmerican Southagainst the backdrop of theAmerican Civil WarandtheReconstruction era, thefilm tells the story ofScarlett O'Hara, the strong-willed daughter of a Georgiaplantation owner. It follows her romantic pursuit ofAshley Wilkes, who is married to his cousin,Melanie Hamilton, and her subsequent marriage toRhett Butler. The leading roles are played byVivien Leigh(Scarlett),Clark Gable(Rhett),Leslie Howard(Ashley), andOlivia de Havilland(Melanie).Production was difficult from the start. Filming was delayed for two yearsbecause of Selznick's determination to secure Gable for the role of RhettButler, and the "search for Scarlett" led to 1,400 women beinginterviewed for the part. The original screenplay was written bySidney Howardand underwent many revisions by severalwriters in an attempt to reduce it to a suitable length. The originaldirector,George Cukor, was firedshortly after filming began and was replaced by Fleming, who in turn wasbriefly replaced bySam Woodwhile Fleming took some timeoff due toexhaustion. The film received positivereviews upon its release in December 1939, although some reviewers found it tobe too long. The casting was widely praised, and many reviewers found Leighespecially suited to her role as Scarlett. At the12th Academy Awards, itreceived tenAcademy Awards(eightcompetitive, two honorary) from thirteen nominations, including wins forBest Picture,Best Director(Fleming),Best AdaptedScreenplay(posthumously awarded to Sidney Howard),Best Actress(Leigh),andBestSupporting Actress(Hattie McDaniel, becoming the first African American to win anAcademy Award). It set records for the total number of wins and nominations atthe time. Gone with the Windwas immensely popular when firstreleased. It became thehighest-earning film madeup to that point, and held the record for over a quarter of acentury. Whenadjusted formonetary inflation, it is stillthe highest-grossing film in history. It was re-releasedperiodically throughout the 20th century and became ingrained in popularculture. Although the film has been criticized ashistorical revisionismglorifyingslavery, it has been credited with triggering changes in the way in whichAfrican Americans are depicted cinematically. The film is regarded as oneofthe greatest films of alltime; it has placed in the top ten of theAmerican Film Institute'slist of thetop 100 American filmssince the list'sinception in 1998.In 1989, the United StatesLibrary of Congressselectedit for preservation in theNational Film Registry.
