About the Artist:
ZHOU LING, CHINESE (1941 - )

Zhou Ling was born in Tian Jing, China in 1941. She studied Chinese history and art, as well as Western art from the Renaissance through Modernism at the Central Institute Nationalities in Beijing. Upon graduation, she married her teacher, Liu Bingjiang, causing a scandal at the time. According to official communist norms, a teacher is prohibited from having an intimate relationship with a student. Ten days after their marriage, Zhou Ling was separated from her husband and sent away to work in Yunnan Province -- an area in extreme Southwestern China, which borders on Burma, Laos, and Vietnam. She spent eight years living among the minority tribes. Zhou Ling's graduation, marriage, and assignment to Yunnan occurred on the eve of the Cultural Revolution. Her job in Kunming was to teach art in an Institute of Art and Culture for party officials. The "art" institute was actually a school for propaganda techniques, and Zhou Ling's skills were called upon to make propaganda posters. Zhou Ling said that by 1971, when the Cultural Revolution's political energy began to wind down, she was able to paint by herself.

In 1973, she finally returned to Beijing to be reunited with her husband and child who was born in 1968. The child had been kept in Beijing with grandparents because Zhou Ling had no facilities to care for the baby where she worked. In 1974, Zhou Ling became an art teacher at the Central Institute of Nationalities in Beijing where she taught many students of the minority nationalities among whom she had lived in Yunnan Province. Zhou Ling has been influenced by ancient frescoes, painted pottery, and sculptures. She paints beautiful, earth mother-type women. Large and powerful, they more than confirm Chairman Mao's maxim that "women hold up more than half the sky." In 1991, Zhou Ling traveled to Hawaii. She had been commissioned to do a series of paintings for the Grand Wailea Resort & Spa. Zhou Ling was overwhelmed by the natural beauty of Maui. The tropical environment reminded her of earlier life in the verdant jungles of Yunnan Province. The landscape, its flora and fauna, and people who were Polynesian in appearance brought back memories of the ethnic minority groups of her homeland.

Honolulu's Go-To Gallery for Fine Art Finds New HomeBy Ijfke Ridgley - February 16, 2022
Honolulu’s go-to gallery for fine art, Island Art Galleries has recently opened a sleek new location in Ala Moana Center next to Neiman Marcus. With over three decades of curation experience, founder Jeff Liu hopes to “bring beauty into people’s life and hopefully inspire them with fine art that will last for generations.” He started as a dealer of pre-1940s classic Hawai‘i artworks in 1991, and his newest outpost continues to showcase Hawai‘i favorites like Madge Tennent and Herbert Kawainui Kāne. Though Liu himself grew up in China, his family has ties to Hawai‘i that date back to 1854. This international upbringing is reflected in the artists he represents, who originate from around the world and work in fine art painting, sculpture and glass works. Most notable are paintings by Anthony Casay—one of the most prolific artists in America—and bestseller Zhou Ling, a contemporary Chinese American artist from Beijing whose works Liu describes as having “a harmonious balance between nature and human beings.” Though subject matter is not of great concern when selecting artists, Liu instead seeks artists whose work is “spiritually uplifting and unique, and a pioneer in his or her own style.”1450 Ala Moana Blvd., #2201, Honolulu.Renowned as one of the leaders in the Yunnan School of Art, an avant-garde art moment that revolutionized Chinese painting in recent history, Zhou Ling has successfully brought together the techniques and subject matter of ancient Chinese art with those of classical Western art. Her oil and acrylic paintings are her personal vision of a perfect, fantastic world with a harmonious balance between mankind and nature.Born in 1941 in the city of Tian Jinn in China, Zhou Ling was accepted into the prestigious Central Institute of Nationalities in Beijing, where she studied traditional Chinese painting and was also introduced to the art of Van Gogh, Degas, Monet, Gauguin and Picasso. From Renaissance to contemporary, Zhou Ling was deeply inspired by Impressionism and Cubism. After graduating, Zhou Ling was assigned to teach art at the Institute of Art and Culture in Yunnan, a province in southern China where most of the population is made up of minorities. Zhou Ling was deeply impressed by the beautiful tropical scenery as well as the people and local culture of Yunnan. She began to paint the minority nationals of Yunnan in her unique artistic style, finding inspiration in the women and children, whom she depicts among poetic scenery and tropical jungle, painting faces full of joy. In fact, her experience in Yunnan became the foundation of her artistic style. In 1973, Zhou Ling returned to Beijing to become an instructor at the Central Institute of Nationalities, where she began to study with painter Huang Yong Yu, the creator of China’s contemporary art movement characterized as “Yunnan School of Art” or “Rich Color Paintings”). Led by Huang Yong Yu, Zhou Ling and other Beijing painters such as Ting Shao Kwang and Jiang Te Feng studied intensely to master the techniques of rich color painting. A new era in Chinese painting was born and Yunnan School of Art was introduced to the world. In 1991, Zhou Ling made her first visit to Hawaii. She loved the Islands as much as she loves Yunnan. The bird of paradise, ginger, heliconia and flower leis are familiar, and the spirit of Aloha captures her heart. Much of her work since then depicts Hawaiian culture and landscapes. She received commission form the famous Grand Wailea Resort to paint “Sun”, “Moon” “Water”, “Fire” and “Aloha” for its grand opening in Nov. 1991. Several of her serigraphs and original paintings decorate the 747 guest rooms. There is a wondrous energy, freshness and beauty exploding from Zhou Ling's canvas. Paying tribute to the uniqueness of the Hawaiian culture, each painting shows us, in a simple glance, the spirit of Aloha.Today, Zhou Ling continues to create works in celebration of nature and of mankind. Her subject matter and inspiration are derived from her rich cultural heritage and the ethnic minority groups of her homeland. Her female figures are painted with graceful beauty. The figures are not depicted “Eastern” or “Western,” but simply envelope humanity. Her work seeks to show harmony between people and nature, and reality and fantasy. In her paintings, she seeks to illustrate the beauty of a strong emotion, an imposing strength and eternity.
