HarveyFletcher(September 11,1884 – July 23, 1981) was an Americanphysicist.Known as the \"father ofstereophonicsound\", he is credited with the invention of the 2-Aaudiometer and an early electronichearing aid.He was an investigator into the nature ofspeech and hearing, and made contributions in acoustics, electricalengineering, speech, medicine, music, atomic physics, sound pictures, andeducation. Fletcher was born inProvo, Utah. He graduated fromBrigham Young High Schoolin1904. He enrolled atBrigham Young University(BYU),graduating in 1907 with abachelor\'s degree. Hemarried Lorena Chipman. They were the parents of seven children.HarveyFletcher was the father ofJames C. Fletcher, former president of theUniversity of UtahandNASAAdministratorandof Harvey J. Fletcher, a BYU math professor. In 1911, Fletcher was the firstphysics student to earn aPh.D.summa cum laudefrom theUniversity of Chicago. His dissertation research was on methods todetermine the charge of an electron. This included theoil drop experimentcommonly attributed to his advisorand collaborator,Robert Andrews Millikan.Millikan took sole credit, in return for Fletcher claiming full authorship on arelated result for his dissertation. Fletcher\'s contributions weredetail-oriented but still contributed to the successful experiment, in which heincorporated, among other things, experience with projection lanterns. Millikanwent on to win the 1923Nobel Prize for Physics,in part for this work, and Fletcher kept the agreement a secret until hisdeath. After completing his doctorate, he returned to BYU, where hebecame the head of the physics department. He served in this capacity from 1911until 1916. Fletcher left BYU to work atWestern Electric, establishing himself as a researcher. Hejoined theBell Telephone Laboratories\' Engineering Staff ResearchDepartment where he found great interest in the physics of sound (acousticalscience). He worked there from 1933 to 1949, when he became a professor ofelectrical engineering atColumbia Universityfrom1949 to 1952. He returned to BYU in 1952 to be the Director of Research. Heserved in that role as well as being the first dean of the new College ofPhysics and Engineering Sciences until 1958. Fletcher\'s contributions toofspeech perceptionareamong his best-known work. He showed that speech features are usually spreadover a wide frequency range, and developed thearticulation indextoapproximately quantify the quality of a speech channel. He also developed theconcepts ofequal-loudness contours(commonlyknown asFletcher–Munson curves),loudness scaling and summation, and thecritical band.AtBell Labs, he oversaw research in electrical sound recording, including the first successfulstereophonic recordings, the first live stereo sound transmission, and the production of the first vinylrecording. All of this was done with the help of the conductor of thePhiladelphia Orchestra,LeopoldStokowskibetween 1931–32. Some of his other accomplishmentsinclude the production of the first functional hearing aid, the 2-A audiometer, and the artificial larynx.Much of his research is considered to be authoritative, and hisbooks,Speech and HearingandSpeech and Hearing inCommunication, are notable treatises on the subject. A videoofFletcher was made in 19
