\"Farm Family\" Sanzo Wada 1883-1968 Framed Japanese Art:
$499.99

Art Title: "Farm Family"Artist: Sanzo WadaType: Woodblock Oban printDescription: "... Wada Sanzō's Farm Family....represents the calm and comfortable life of country family.  The print depicts a mother breast-feeding her baby while her small son and daughter play nearby.  The poverty typical of so man farmers is denied by the inclusion of a plethora of goods (such as the bicycle prominently placed in the foreground) and the suggestion of leisure indicated by the children at play and the seated mother.  The radiant sunlight contributes to the atmosphere of warmth in rural family life."

About Sanzo WadaSanzo was born in Hyogo Prefecture, moving to Fukuoka with his family at age 13, and moved to again to Tokyo at age 16 with the intention of becoming a painter.  In Tokyo, Sanzo studied under Kuroda Seiki both privately and at the Tokyo School of Arts and was a member of the Hakubakai artists' society, with whom he exhibited his works.  Sanzo was sent to France by the Ministry of Education to study art in 1909.  He stayed in Europe until 1914, returning to Japan in 1915 after a year-long stay in Burma (now Myanmar) studying the arts of those cultures.

Sanzo became a faculty member of the Imperial Art Institute and founded the Japan Standard Color Association in 1927.  In 1932 he was appointed professor at the Design Department of Tokyo School of Arts where he served until 1944.  Sanzo was a leading color theorist and created one of the first systematic approaches to color in Japan, published in the eleven-volume boxed series Color Schemes in 1934.  The series was the first mass-produced in-depth analysis of color pairings and combinations, laying the groundwork for modern color studies in Japan.  Each box contained another immaculately-bound two-color printed gatefold box which held a series of 30 postcard-sized pieces of cardstock each.  The cards were incrdibly precisely printed and die-cut squares of color combinations glued on top of bilingual English, kanji and and hiragana letterpress-printed color descriptions of each color dyad, triad and tetrad.  The entire collection is a tour de force of both print production an dconsideration of the impact of color.

Sanzo reorganised the Japan Standard Color Association into Japan Color Research Labratory in 1945, and served as its president.  He was also and award-winning designer - his poster for the ill fated 1940 Tokyo Olympics won out against other competitors in the late 1930s and Sanzo also won the Academy Awards in 1954 for his work in movie "Hell's Gate".  Sanzo was prolific in regards to designing postcards, painting, printmaking and creating illustration work.  His book "The Story of Color" was published in 1952 and reprinted in 1957.
