R.M.S. \"EMPRESS OF BRITAIN\"

Canadian Pacific Steamships Ltd.

\"Empress of Britain\"entered service with Canadian Pacific in 1931, and was soon established as the largest, fastest and most luxurious liner on the Canadian route. When WW2 broke out in 1939 she was requisitioned by the Admiralty for conversion to troopship. In the first year of the war, she carried thousands of Canadian, Australian and New Zealand troops to Europe, but on 26th October 1940, nearing the Irish coast, she was attacked and bombed by German aircraft. Severely damaged and wracked by fire, she was taken in tow for safer waters, but two days later was struck by torpedoes from the German submarine \"U-32\"and sunk. The bombs and torpedoes had killed 49 men with dozens more injured.Her sinking was avenged, when just two days later, the U-32 was itself sunk by the Royal Navy destroyerH.M.S. Harvester.
