[Civil War] Farmer Relays Difficulties In Low Prices Due To Abolitionism:
$110.00

2 pp, 7 7/8 x 9 ¾, April 6th, 1862, no place, two letters apparently from family members with the first signed by Asa K. Stanton. The second to “Sister” and signed by another person. A nice home front letter that provides a glimpse into the troubles brought on by the Civil War.

“...I never expect to be able to do much again. It is almost a year and a half since I have done a day’s work. The times is hard here, the hardest that I ever [seen]...Grain is the lowest...Wheat 55 to 60. Corn 12 to 14 and oats not worth taking to market and for all this we may thank or curse the workings of abolitionism....I have not seen or heard from Daniel since Mr. Brace was here only by J. Kadsal and that was poor authority...Mr. Sickles arrived on Friday...They took him...but let him go as they could [do] nothing with him...I have let out the most of my land this season for to hire at the prices they ask here will not pay...Tell Daniel Harding I should like to hear from him to know how he gets along with his Black Republican friends...”

As is sometimes the case during the paper shortages of the Civil War, another writer adds a letter on the same day to “Sister.” The letter is quite readable but the signature is cramped.

The writer tells “Sister” that Asa “has left [the] room for me to write a few lines...Asa’s health is quite poor. I do not think he has been well for a week...I have lived in hopes that he would get well , but the prospect looks dark. Still he may outlive you and me. I have no desire to live any longer than he does. All I wish to live for is to take care of him...I go about very little since Asa has been sick. I go to meeting the most of any places...”

Light toning. Fold splits reinforced with archival tape.
