The New South was an Occupation paper published at Port Royal, South Carolina. An original early issue, # 9, October 18, 1862 w 4pp of news, printed on dark yellow/orange \"secesh\" paper. The crude orange paper stock indicates it was likely been made from made from local agricultural corn or sugar cane stalks,: Southern paper mills often used such sources being unable to obtain good quality paper due to the Union Blockade. The newspaper also features news of the Emancipation Proclamation and the deaths of soldiers, teachers educating the freedmen, local Union regiment news, Generals Terry & Saxton, also war news from Florida, local advertising, shipping news, etc. Complete, archival repairs, stains. The paper came with some other papers identified to Private Eugene Vickers, Co C 97th Pennsylvania Volunteers. Comes w his service info. A rare original union soldier paper printed on Confederate agricultural plant material.
