\"CARTHAGE - ANCIENS PORTS\" TUNISIA, MEDITERRANEAN, Unkonwn Publisher Date, DB?:
$9.99

Carthage was the capital city of the ancient Carthaginiancivilization, on the eastern side of the Lake of Tunis, in what isnow Tunisia. It was one of themost important trading hubs of the Ancient Mediterranean and one of themost affluent cities of the classical world.

The ancient city was destroyed by the Roman Republic in the ThirdPunic War in 146 BC and then re-developed as Roman Carthage, whichbecame the major city of the Roman Empire in the province of Africa. There was a “Muslim period before the regionalshifted power to Kairouan and the Medina of Tunis in the medievalperiod, until the early 20th century, when it began to develop intoa coastal suburb of Tunis, incorporating as a Carthage municipalityin 1919.

Carthage was built on apromontory with sea inlets to the north and the south. The city’s location made it master of the Mediterranean’smaritime trade. All ships crossing the sea had to pass between Sicilyand the coast of Tunisia, where Carthage was built, affording itgreat power and influence. Two large artificial harbors were built within thecity, one for harboring the city’s massive navy of 220 warships and the other formercantile trade. A walled tower overlooked both harbors.

This is a postcard, published in France, that captures a quiet scene along the Mediterranean? with a mountain rangeacross the water. There is a caption “Carthage– Anciens Ports” on the image. It is a beautiful undated card and is in good condition with minor wearand a clean, clear, nicely colored image. The reverse has the usual aging but no prominent stains or dirt.

The colors on the card may vary due to the scanner settings and screen projections.Unless otherwisenoted, I use Wikipedia, Playle\'s and Metropostcard for research and try to be as accurate as possible. Corrections appreciated.
