Sir George White Pickering,FRS(26June 1904 – 3 September 1980) was a Britishmedical doctorand academic. Pickering wasRegiusProfessor of Medicineat theUniversity of Oxfordfrom1956 to 1968, andMasterofPembroke College, Oxfordfrom1968 to 1975.Hewas a Governor ofAbingdon Schoolfrom 1969 until 1974.Pickering was the author of thebookCreative Malady(1974).The book explorescreativityandmental illnessin the lives ofCharles Darwin,Mary Baker Eddy,Sigmund Freud,Florence Nightingale,Marcel ProustandElizabeth Barrett Browning.In the1957 Birthday Honours, itwas announced that Pickering was to be made aKnight Bachelorin recognition of his role as RegiusProfessor of Medicine at the University of Oxford.On 16 July 1957, he wasknighted byQueen Elizabeth IIatBuckingham Palace.
