This is a rare and historically significant Antique 19th c. Primitive American Folk Art Uncle Sam Painted Wood Sign Flag Holder, hand-painted, and depicting a tall figure of Uncle Sam in profile. This figural wood cut-out silhouette of our national mascot retains its original painted details, with genuine weathering from over a century of outside use. There are several old metal mountings attached that would have anchored the figure to the ground, and also held the American flag. Approximately 53 1/2 x 13 1/3 inches (at its widest point) and the sign is 3/4 inches thick. Good condition for age and use, with some mild weathering, wood splitting, minor soiling and other typical outside wear (please see photos.) This work approximately dates to the late 19th - early 20th century. These pieces are not common, and I could only find two other comparable pieces in my research, and none were as old as this one.
