HISTORY OF THE CHALLENGE COIN

DuringWorld War I, American volunteers from all parts of the country filledthe newly formed flying squadrons. Some were wealthy scions attendingcolleges such as Yale and Harvard who quit in mid-term to join the war.In one squadron, a wealthy lieutenant ordered medallions struck insolid bronze carrying the squadron emblem for every member of hissquadron. He himself carried his medallion in a small leather poucharound his neck. Shortly afteracquiring the medallions, the pilot\'s aircraft was severely damaged byground fire. He was forced to land behind enemy lines and wasimmediately captured by a German patrol. In order to discourage hisescape, the Germans took all of his personal identification except forthe small leather pouch around his neck. Inthe meantime, he was taken to a small French town near the front.Taking advantage of a bombardment that night, he escaped. However, hewas without personal identification. He succeeded in avoiding Germanpatrols and reached the front lines. With great difficulty, he crossedno-man\'s land. Eventually, he stumbled onto a French outpost.Unfortunately, saboteurs had plagued the French in this sector. Theysometimes masqueraded as civilians and wore civilian clothes. Notrecognizing the young pilot\'s American accent, the French thought him asaboteur and made ready to execute him. Just in time, he remembered hisleather pouch containing the medallion. He showed the medallion to hiswould-be executioners. His French captors recognized the squadroninsignia on the medallion and delayed long enough for him to confirmhis identity. Instead of shooting him, they gave him a bottle of wine. Backat his squadron, it became a tradition to ensure that all memberscarried their medallion or coin at all times. This was accomplishedthrough a challenge in the following manner: a challenger would ask tosee the coin. If the challenged could not produce his coin, he wasrequired to buy a drink of choice for the member who challenged him. Ifthe challenged member produced his coin, the challenging member wasrequired to pay for the drink. This tradition continued throughout thewar and for many years after while surviving members of the squadronwere still alive. The fighting men and women of the 48th IntelligenceSquadron proudly continue this tradition.

THIS GREAT COIN IS AVAILABLE IN ANOTHER OF OUR sales AND WHEN COMBINED WITH THIS AUCITON SHIPPING FOR THIS ITEM IS FREE!

THE CHALLENGE SomeOrganizations even have regulations regarding Military Coins. Here isan example. A \'Coin Check\' consists of a challenge and a response. 1.RULES: a. The challenge is initiated by drawing your coin, holding itin the air by whatever means possible and state, scream, shout orotherwise verbally acknowledge that you are initiating a coin check.Another, but less vocal method is to firmly place it on the bar, table,Or floor (this should produce an audible noise which can be easilyheard by those being challenged, but try not to leave a permanentimprint). If you accidentally drop your coin and it makes an audiblesound upon impact, then you have just \"accidentally\" initiated a coincheck. (This is called paying the price for improper care of yourcoin.\" b. The response consists of allthose persons being challenged drawing their coin in a like manner(other organizational coins are invalid). You must produce a coin withYOUR UNIT\'S LOGO on it. c. If you arechallenged and are unable to properly respond, you must buy a round ofdrinks for the challenger and the group being challenged. d.If everyone being challenged responds in the correct manner, thechallenger must buy a round of drinks for all those people hechallenged. e. Failure to buy a round is a despicable crime and will require that you turn-in your Coin to the issuing agency. 2. Coin checks are permitted, ANY TIME, ANY PLACE\'. (Keep OPSEC in mind, be smart!) 3.There are no exceptions to the rules. They apply to those clothed orunclothed. At the time of the challenge, you are permitted one-step andan arms reach to locate your coin. If you still cannot reach it --SORRY ABOUT THAT! 4. A Coin is a coin.Coins attached on belt buckles are considered \"belt buckles.\" Coins onkey chains are considered \"key chains.\" Coins placed in a\"holder/clasp\" and worn around the neck like a necklace are valid andare considered a coin.

United States Marine Corps Honorable Discharge

If You\'re Proud To Be An American Wave This Flag In Honor Of The Fallen And Women Who Served Our Country For those who have served in the past For those who are serving now And For Those Who Are Still THANK YOU AMERICAN HEROES!! I am well. Hope you are. Tell Brother Walt and Brother Elmer the Marine Corps beats working for old man Minch by a mile. Tell them to join up quick before all of the places are filled.
I was restless at first because you got to stay in bed till nearly 6 a.m. but I am getting so I like to sleep late. Tell Walt and Elmer all you do before breakfast is smooth your cot, and shine some things. No hogs to slop, feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay. Practically nothing. We all haveto shave but it is not so bad, there\'s warm water & no out house!Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, fruit, etc., but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, ham, steak, fried eggplant, pie and other regular food. Tell Walt and Elmer you can always sit by the two city boys that live on coffee. Their food plus yours holds you until noon when you get fed again. It\'s no wonder these city boys can\'t walk much. We go on \"route marches,\" which the platoon sergeant says are long walks to harden us. If he thinks so, it\'s not my place to tell him different. A \"route march\" is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys get sore feet and we all ride back in trucks. The country is nice but awful flat. The sergeant is like a school teacher. He nags a lot. The Captain is like the school board. Majors and colonels just ride around and frown. They don\'t bother you none.
This next one will kill Walt and Elmer with laughter... I keep getting medals for shooting &I don\'t know why. The bulls-eye is near as big as a chipmunk\'s head and don\'t move, and it ain\'t shooting at you like the Higgett boys at home. All you got to do is lie there all comfortable and hit it. You don\'t even load your own cartridges. They come in boxes. Then we have what they call hand-to-hand combat training. You get to wrestle with them city boys. I have to be real careful though, they break real easy. It ain\'t like fighting with that ole bull at home. I\'m about the best they got in this except for that Tug Jordan from over in Silver Lake. I only beat him once. He joined up the same time as me, but I\'m only 5\'6\" and 130 pounds and he\'s 6\'8\" and near 300 pounds dry.
Be sure to tell Walt and Elmer to hurry and join before other fellers get onto this setup and come stampeding in.Your loving daughter, Stephanie Marie

SATURDAY 10-23-04 My wife Hildaand I were very honored and humbled that we were invited to attend the Marine Birthday Ball in San Diego, with the West Coast Marine Bands, as we celebrated the 229 years of honorable and distinguished service of our Corps....what a great time we all had! Thank you to the Marines of the MCRD Band....

I am aware that this may not mean much to anyone else, but to Marines, its ourbirthday, which is 10 November 1775, and its celebration every year, is a BIG deal!

Marines know, remember, and celebrateour birthday unlike any other service. Tradition is important to us.EveryMarinecan tell you the birth date of our Corps. It is ingrained from the first weeks of Boot Camp and OCS. This is a tradition we will proudly carry forward.

You see, with Marines there is a certain bond, a commonality, an esprit de corps that is perhaps summed up in the Latin phrase Marines for generations have used — Semper Fidelis. This term means \"Always Faithful,\" and is often shortened to Semper Fi.

Being a former Marine, the pride and honor of being a Marine never leaves you. Another phrase often used is, \"Once a Marine, Always a Marine and There is no such thing as an X Marine.\"

For those of you who are trying to understand, you really cannot except to notice a lifetime change in your love one! He will stand a little taller and carry himself with a swagger that assures all, that everything is going to be okay....this will stay with him for life!

The ceremony began with the march of colors and the United States national anthems, followed by an invocation

The annual reading of the 13th Commandant, Gen. John A. Lejeune’s birthday message, was read, followed by current Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Michael W. Hagee’s message posted on two wide screens.

The CommandingOfficer of H & HS Company MCRD San Diego then addressed the audience. She was great and stirred the emotions of us all!

The cake cutting ceremony took place presenting the first cake to the Guest of Honor and then the Oldest and youngest Marines present.

The colors were marched off sharply followed by the playing of Anchors AWEIGH and the Marine Corps Hymn...

We were then served dinner and a night of dancing and exchanging sea stories!

Happy Birthday Marines...May God bless the USA & the MARINES! Semper Fi Vic Veturis

WARNING....DO NOT READ.....YOUR MONITOR WILL TEAR UP!I just wanted to get the day over with and go down to Smokey\'s. Sneaking a look at my watch, I saw the time, 1655. Five minutes to go before the cemetery gates are closed for the day.Full dress was hot in the August sun. Oklahoma summertime was as bad
as ever--the heat and humidity at the same level--both too high.
I saw the car pull into the drive, \'69 or \'70 modelCadillac Deville, looked factory-new. It pulled into the parking lot at a snail\'s pace. An old woman got out so slow I thought she was paralyzed; she had a cane and a sheaf of flowers--about four or five bunches as best I could tell.
I couldn\'t help myself. The thought came unwanted, and left a slightly bitter taste: \'She\'s going to spend an hour, and for this old Marine, my hip hurts like hell and I\'m ready to get out of here right now!\' But for this day, my duty was to assist anyone coming in.
Kevin would lock the \'In\' gate and if I could hurry theold offerdy along, we might make it to Smokey\'s in time.I broke post attention. My hip made gritty noises when I took the first step
and the pain went up a notch. I must have made a real military sight: middle-aged man with a small pot gut and half a limp, in Marine full-dress uniform, which had lost its razor crease about thirty minutes after I began the watch at the cemetery.
I stopped in front of her, halfway up the walk. She looked up at me with an old woman\'s squint.
\'Ma\'am,may I assist you in any way?\' She took long enough to answer.
\'Yes, son. Can you carry these flowers? I seem to be moving a tad slow these days.\'
\'My pleasure, ma\'am.\'
Well, it wasn\'t too much of a lie.
She looked again. \'Marine, where were you stationed?\'
\'Vietnam, ma\'am. Ground-pounder. \'69 to \'71.\'
She looked at me closer. \'Wounded in action, I see. Well done, Marine. I\'ll be as quick as I can.\'
I lied a little bigger: \'No hurry, ma\'am.\'
She smiled and winked at me. \'Son, I\'m 85-years-old and I can tell a lie from a long way off. Let\'s get this done. Might be the last time I can do this. My name\'s Joanne Wieserman, and I\'ve a few Marines I\'d like to see one more time.\'
\'Yes, ma \'am. At your service.\'She headed for theWorld War I section, stopping at a stone. She picked one of the flowers out of my arm and laid it on top of the stone. She murmured something I couldn\'t quite make out. The name on the marble wasDonald S. Davidson,USMC: France 1918.
She turned AWEIGH and made a straight line for theWorld
War II section, stopping at one stone. I saw a tear slowly tracking
its way down her cheek. She put a bunch on a stone; the name wasStephen X.Davidson, USMC, 1943.
She went up the row a ways and laid another bunch on a stone,Stanley
J. Wieserman, USMC, 1944.She paused for a second. \'Two more, son, and we\'ll be done\'
I almost didn\'t say anything, but, \'Yes, ma\'am. Take your time.\'
She looked confused. \'Where\'s the Vietnam section, son? I seem to have lost my way.\'I pointed with my chin. \'That way, ma\'am.\'
\'Oh!\' she chuckled quietly. \'Son, me and old age ain\'t too friendly.\'
She headed down the walk I\'d pointed at. She stopped at a couple of stones before she found the ones she wanted. She placed a bunch onLarry Wieserman, USMC, 1968,
and the last onDarrel Wieserman, USMC, 1970.
She stood there and murmured a few words I still couldn\'t make out.
\'OK, son, I\'m finished. Get me back to my car and you can go home.\'
Yes, ma\'am. If I may ask, were those your kinfolk?\'
She paused. \'Yes,Donald Davidson
was my father,Stephen
was my uncle,Stanley
was my husband,Larry
andDarrel
were our sons. All killed in action, all Marines.\'Instead of \'The End,\'...just think of \'Taps.\'As a final thought on my part, let me share a favorite prayer: \'Lord,
keep our servicemen and women safe, whether they serve at home or overseas.
Hold them in your loving hands and protect them as they protect us.\'
Let\'s all keep those currently serving and those who have gone before in our thoughts. They are the reason for the many freedoms we enjoy.
\'In God We Trust.\'
Sorry about your monitor; it made mine blurry too!
