Thomas Brassey, 1st Earl BrasseyGCB,TD,JP,DL(11 February 1836 – 23 February1918) was a BritishLiberal Partypolitician,Governor of Victoriaandfounder ofThe Naval Annual. Brasseywas the son of the railway contractorThomas Brassey, by Maria Harrison, daughter of JosephHarrison, a forwarding and shipping agent. He was the brother ofHenry BrasseyandAlbert Brassey. He was educated atRugbyandUniversity College, Oxford,and wascalled to the Bar,Lincoln's Inn, in 1864. Brassey was brieflyMember of the seat at a by-electionin June and then losing it again thegeneralelection in July.He returned to Parliament threeyears later as the representative forHastingsatthe1868 generalelection,holding that seat until he wasdefeated at the1886 generalelection.He wasPresidentofthe first day of the 1874Co-operative Congress.He served underWilliam Ewart GladstoneasCivil Lord of theAdmiraltyfrom 1880to 1884 and asParliamentarySecretary to the Admiraltyfrom 1884 to 1884. He was madeaKnightCommander of the Order of the Bath(KCB) in 1881and raised to the peerage asBaronBrassey, of Bulkeley in the County of Chester, in 1886.He again held office underGladstone and thenLordRoseberyas aLord-in-waitingfrom 1893to 1895.In 1893Queen Victoriaappointed nine members as theRoyal Opium Commission,which consisted of seven British and two Indian members, which was headed byLord Brassey, who served as the Chairman. The Commission was to report onwhether India Opium export trade to far east (China) should be ended and,further, whether poppy growing and consumption of Opium in India itself shouldbe prohibited save for medical purpose. From 1895to 1900 he wasGovernor of Victoria, acolony in Australia, and lived in its capital,Melbourne, inGovernment House.He returned to the United Kingdom in March 1900, by way ofColombo. Brassey is rememberedin Australia's national capital,Canberra, with Brassey House, now a hotel (originally aguest house) in the inner suburb ofBarton,Australian Capital Territory, completed in 1927 to coincide with therelocation of theFederal ParliamentfromMelbourne to Canberra. Brassey House originally offered 45 rooms with sharedbathing facilities, for the exclusive use of members of parliament andmid-level government officials relocating to Canberra. During the mid 1960s thegovernment of the day expanded the capacity to 131 rooms and added conferenceand meeting rooms. It was sold in the mid-1980s to local businessmen and hasbeen operated since as a residential hotel, now with 75 rooms includingensuites. It is said to have been built back-to-front, with the more ornatefaçade facing Belmore Gardens and its plainer face to Macquarie Street.35.3115°S 149.1350°E
