1930s KISSPROOF BRASS ROUGE (ORNATE PATTERN) COMPACT USA Vintage NICE RAREA Little History WOW KISSPROOF TATTOO & SAVAGE READ Below !While theKissproofname might have been considered risqué, at the time, the new advertising campaign would certainly challenge the typically conservative themes used by cosmetic advertisers of the day. Delica Laboratories took a radical and undoubtedly shocking approach whenKissproofbegan to be associated with an extraordinarily evocative image drawn by one of America’s earliest pin-up artists – Rolf Armstrong. In 1924 Armstrong had drawn, in pastels, a portrait of silent movie star Anna Q Nilsson and this had appeared on the cover of that year’s August edition ofScreenland.Nilsson, whose name is all but forgotten today, had a prolific silent movie career and even has her own star on Hollywood\'s Walk of Fame.
The image was stunning – almost hypnotic – and showed Nilsson’s turbaned head with her chin lifted, defiantly, her red-painted, bee-stung, lips slightly open and her eyes half-closed. The fact that half of her face was in shadow simply reinforced the suggestion that here was an invitation that would be hard to resist – no matter what the reader perceived that invitation to be. For Younghusband this image would also prove to be irresistible as the centerpiece of his new marketing campaign particularly as Anna Nilsson had been voted as \'Most Popular Movie Actress\' in 1926. And so, The Kissproof Girl was born and in 1927, alone, Delica Laboratories budgeted to spend $250,000And what of James Younghusband? It is fair to say that his persona started to get the better of him. The personality traits that saw him become a dare-devil stunt pilot and an inventor of cosmetics for women also saw him enter a succession of disastrous marriages after the death of his first wife.
