A man of great culture and diplomatic ability, Talleyrand played a major role in Napoléon’s foreign policy. Unfortunately, his avarice matched his diplomatic skills, so he increasingly played a double role, representing the interests of France’s enemies at the same time that he was negotiating on behalf of the Emperor.
