Paul Barras was a founding member of the five-member "Directory" entrusted in the new constitution of 1795 with the executive power. He was also the most important political figure of Napoleon's early career, making him a full general in command of the Army of Italy at 26. Barras also introduced his protégé to the Creole beauty Marie-Joséphe-Rose de Beauharnais, soon to be known forevermore as Joséphine.
