“Empress Marie-Louise”
Baron François Gérard -
Marie-Louise of Austria, the oldest of seven, was the daughter of François II, Emperor of Austria. She was fluent in French and cultivated in art and music. At the age of 40, Napoléon, for political reasons and anxious to found a dynasty, married the eighteen year old Marie-Louise. They grew very attached to each other and Napoléon covered her with jewels. On March 20, 1811, the King of Rome was born. After the fall of the Empire, however, she returned to Vienna with her son, never to see the Emperor again.
