Engraving of Empress Joséphine in her coronation robe from the book, "Ceremonies of the French Empire"
- 1805
On the day of her ascension to the throne, Joséphine shimmered with diamonds, wearing a gown of white satin and mantle made of gold-embroidered velvet. Although not a great beauty, she had pretty chestnut hair, dark blue eyes, long lashes and a sexy, languid style. Napoléon said of her, “Truly she was more full of grace than any woman I have ever seen.”
