First Consul Bonaparte standing in front of Malmaison
Jean-Baptiste Isabey - 1802
Napoléon is depicted here, perhaps for the first time, in a characteristic pose that would become his signature stance. Joséphine purchased Malmaison early in their marriage, and spent lavish amounts of money making it a beautiful and comfortable residence. It was a place where Napoléon could truly relax.
Historical Provenance - Joachim Murat’s collection
