Once Emperor, Napoléon began to create an Imperial nobility. Through the end of his reign, he was to name 31 dukes, 452 counts, 1,500 barons and 1,474 chevaliers. Among them, his brother-in-law Joachim Murat, a superb cavalry officer, was surprised to be made Grand Admiral of the Empire.
