Strongbox of King Joseph of Spain

Strongbox of King Joseph of Spain

Martin-Guillaume Biennais - c. 1810

Napoléon and his older brother, Joseph, were rivals as children. As an adult, Joseph bridled at taking orders from his younger brother, although the Emperor conferred both honors and responsibilities on him, including making him King of Naples and later King of Spain. This safe was captured by the English at the Battle of Vittoria in June 1813.
