Study for “18th Brumaire”

Francoise Bouçhot - c. 1840

This study for a illustrative series commissioned by King Louis-Philippe, shows Napoléon in the Council of Five Hundred on November 10, 1799. The Council, presided over by his brother Lucien, was meeting in St. Cloud, a suburb of Paris. At this stage it was unclear whether Napoléon’s attempt to take over the government would succeed.
