Napolťonís Madras kerchief worn on St. Helena

- c. 1818-19

Due to the high humidity on the island, Napolťon preferred to wear a kerchief to cover his head rather than a felt hat. Josťphine introduced her husband to this West Indian custom. One can imagine him wearing this cloth while tending the garden that he started to plant in 1819, rising each day at 5:30 a.m.
