Busts of Napoléon and Marie-Louise

Baron François Joseph Bosio - c. 1812

In addition to his bronze portraits of the Imperial family, Bosio, a master in the medium, was employed by Napoléon to make the bas-reliefs for the sculptor Pierre-Nolasque Bergeret’s monument, the 144 foot-high Place Vendôme column. Modeled after Trajan’s column in Rome, the spiral veneer surrounding the stone structure, was cast from the cannons confiscated after the Battle of Austerlitz.
