“Portrait of General Jean-Baptiste Kléber”

Jean Urbain Guérin - 1798

After 14 months in Egypt, Napoléon returned to France in August 1799, one of several times he appeared to abandon his men when victory became unlikely. He appointed the courageous General Jean-Baptiste Kléber to take charge of the doomed Egyptian expedition, which was to cost France nearly 40,000 soldiers.
