General Bertrand was one of four friends who chose to share Napoléon’s exile. The others were General Tristan de Montholon, General Gaspard Gourgaud and Count Emmanuel de Las Cases. Also accompanying the Emperor in exile were Fanny Bertrand and Albine de Montholon, his friends’ loyal wives. After Napoléon’s death, General Bertrand filled this box with souvenirs of the Emperor before leaving St. Helena.
