Preparatory study for a head of a wounded soldier

Théodore Géricault - 1817

The suffering was unfathomable during the retreat from Russia in 1812 as the Grand Army slogged through the icy Russian winter with Cossacks ambushing and killing them at every turn. Without Marshall Ney’s brilliant rear guard action, the entire army might have been lost. As it was, of the more than 530,000 men estimated to have left for Russia, only a few thousand returned.
