The History of this Battle

TheBattleof Lepantowas anaval engagementthat took place on 7 October 1571 when afleet of theHoly League, a coalition ofCatholic statesarranged byPope Pius V, inflicted a major defeat on the fleet oftheOttoman Empirein theGulf of Patras. The Ottoman forces were sailing westward fromtheir naval station inLepanto(theVenetianname of ancient Naupactus) when they met the fleet of the HolyLeague which was sailing east fromMessina,Sicily.

What is a Galley

Agalleywasa type ofshipwhich relied mostly onoarsfor propulsion that was used forwarfare,trade, andpiracymostly in the seas surrounding Europe. It developed in theMediterranean Searegion duringantiquityand continued to exist invarious forms until the early 19th century. It typically had a long, slenderhull, shallowdraft, and often a lowfreeboard. Most types of galleys also hadsails that could be used in favorable winds, but they relied primarily on oarsto move independently of winds and currents. The term \"galley\"originated from a Greek term for a small type of galley and came in use inEnglish from about 1300.
