Cambacérès was renowned throughout Paris for the sumptuousness of his table, where guests enjoyed in reverent silence such delicacies as partridges roasted on one side and grilled on the other. By contrast, Napoléon preferred roast chicken and other simple fare, accompanied by watered wine.
